Load-responsive control of electrochromic windows for commercial buildings: Global cooling benefits and climate-dependent energy trade-offs
This study compares two control strategies for electrochromic windows in commercial buildings: a Load strategy based on predicted sensible load and a fixed 24 °C temperature-based strategy. Across 384 worldwide weather records, the Load strategy cut cooling electricity in most climates but raised heating gas use, especially in colder regions. Its annual energy use was slightly higher than the temperature-based strategy, so it mainly shifts energy between cooling and heating rather than saving energy overall.
