Binary systems based on fatty acids and alcohols as bio-based thermochromic phase change materials for thermal energy storage
This study develops bio-based thermochromic phase change materials from a three-component mixture of bromocresol purple dye, stearic acid, and behenyl alcohol, where the fatty acid and alcohol both serve as phase change materials. The mixtures show high melting enthalpy (about 150–200 J/g) between 50 and 70 °C, thermal stability up to roughly 190 °C, and a clear color change during phase transitions, suggesting use as both energy storage media and colorimetric indicators.
